from the Cycle 3 |

 |
The
thief uses the egg as a pass. He looks nobler, and enters the city
unbothered, walks through temples and barracks, descends the long
stairs that lead to warehouses, leaking tanks and sewage, follows the
small streams of water that generate from the cracks in the
foundations... |
| |
 |
...crosses
torrents that converge in rivers that engulf in marshes... |
| |
 |
...and
finally reaches the shores of the Internal Sea. That's where the Thief
sits and waits for the Outer Mothers, the Mermaids, the last to emerge
from lethargy, so powerful and misterious, and when they migrate next
to the shore, the Thieves harpoon them... |
| |
 |
...and ride them
for days, until they are exhausted, and receive fifth and last egg in
their large mouth.
After, they separate, Thief makes his way back to the forest, hunted by
the Soldiers, while Mermaids break in languid chants, form large
regroupments and vanish in the deep of the Sea, performing misterious
dances that no Dweller has ever seen. |
| |
 |
Somewhere
in open sea the eggs disclose, and the small larvae come to the
surface, where they find the Travelers ready to take care of them. They
free the baby Mermaids from fragments of egg and let them go in the Sea
where they belong. |
| |
 |
The
other larvae, they nest them among their long hair, and start their
journey. In the marshes, where food is abundant, they hide their baby
sisters, away from the eyes of hungry Thieves. Soon the baby Travellers
will be ready to to engage their first voyage. |
